James Lent, Interim Artistic Director
Dr. James Lent is excited to serve as Interim Artistic Director for the Angeles Chorale. As principal pianist for the chorale for 15 years, Dr. Lent brings a deep experience in the inner workings of the organization, and a familiarity with the members (past and present) that we want to serve as we begin the 49th season and start looking toward the 50th anniversary year.
Dr. Lent serves as Principal Music Faculty at AMDA, the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where he serves as a vocal coach, ensemble music instructor, and has been musical director for over 15 productions since he began there in 2011. Dr. Lent is also the head of the Collaborative Piano Unit and Continuing Lecturer at the UCLA School of Music, where he has been on the faculty since 2009, and has been principal pianist for the Chorale and Chamber Singers since 2017, where he has assisted and supported preparations for major works including Auerbach’s Symphony No. 6, Haydn’s Harmoniemesse, Handel’s Acis and Galatea, Dave Brubeck’s Gates of Justice, Bach’s Jesu Meine Freude, Locklair’s Changing Perceptions, Brahms’s Quartets Op. 92, Schoenberg’s Kol Nidre, Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, and Richard Danielpour’s Passion of Yesya which won a Grammy for the UCLA Chamber Singers in 2021 for Best Choral Performance.
Dr. Lent received the Doctor of Musical Arts from the Yale School of Music, and was a winner of the New York Concert Artists Guild Competition which launched him on an intense 4 year period of touring and performing as both a recital and concerto soloist throughout the US and 6 countries. He has performed, collaborated, and worked with conductors including Pierre Boulez, Christoph Eschenbach, Jeffrey Domoto, Nicholas Wyss, James Bass, Donald Neuen, and John Sutton.
