Angeles Chorale Audition Information
Thank you for your interest in joining the Chorale!
Before we ask you for your information, we want you to know more
about the benefits and responsibiltiies of being a member.
The benefits:
As a member of the Angeles Chorale, you will
be a part of a growing and vibrant group of people who are dedicated
to singing at the highest possible artistic level. Every rehearsal
is a learning experience under Maestro Neuen, who is one of the truly
gifted choral teachers now living. Your musical
knowledge will grow with each rehearsal, and you will leave each
rehearsal energized rather than tired. Please
see our history
page for samples of our past concerts. We generally
perform the Masterworks, but occaisionally sing popular choral music,
like our recent "America!"
concert, and several past Christmas concerts.
You will be a part of musical
history on (at least) 3 occaisions each season - for our concerts
are a one-of-a-kind experence that has to be performed to be understood.
Additional
concerts are generally available for Chorale members who wish to
participate (smaller ensembles are selected by Maestro Neuen personally).
These events are typically held in support of other musical orgainizations,
such as the Glendale Symphony and the Long Beach Symphony. For those
with formal vocal training, solo parts are occaisonally filled by
Chorale members.
The responsibiilities:
Participation in the Angeles Chorale is a priviledge.
Members are expected to come to the weekly rehearsals held on the
UCLA campus from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m., every Tuesday night. The chorale
rehearsals run from September to
June; parking
is available for $8. Most
importantly, members
are expected
to come to rehearsals to learn, sing, and concentrate. The rehearsals
are an intense experience, as Maestro Neuen covers more content
than
many
directors
- member
focus is vital. Members are expected to work on the music
as needed between rehearsals (generally no more than 1 hour per
week of outside time, depending upon the musicianship of the member).
During the week leading up to a concert, there are generally 2-3
extra rehearsals (for orchestra and soloist preparation). Concerts
are usually on Saturday evenings from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m.
The Chorale is non-profit orgainzation, partially
supported by membership dues of $20 per month, paid for 10 months
($200 / year). If
you can demonstrate
financial need, the Chorale may be able to make arrangements for
you - please audition regardless of your ability to pay the dues!
Members are also expected to participate in the funding and operation
of the Chorale, by promoting the
concerts, supporting fund-raising activities,
and performing volunteer tasks.
Concert dress for the Chorale is white tie
and tails for men and a uniform long black dress for the women
(ordered through the Chorale).
The audition:
Auditions generally take about 10 - 15 minutes
of your time. The
audition
is a low-stress
environment
in which
you
and the Chorale will get
to
know each
other. You will
be required
to do these things:
1. Bring a resume of your musical experience
2. Perform
a
prepared
vocal
piece to show off your voice.
Since
we are primarily a Masterworks chorale, the prepared music
should reflect the organization for which you are auditioning
(i.e., not contemporary
or "pop" music). Please contact us if you have any questions on what to prepare. An accompanist will be available).
Your piece does not have to be memorized.
3. Demonstrate your vocal range, accompanied
by a pianist.
4. Sight
read a short piece of music in your vocal range.

you with
an audition time. NOTE: Opens in a new window.
