Mezzo-Soprano Cynthia Jansen has earned critical praise for her performances both here and abroad. She recently completed a three-year engagement with Munich’s Bavarian State Opera, where her performances included the title role in Arnaldo de Felice’s Medusa (world premiere), Eduige in Rodelinda, Annina in Der Rosenkavalier, the Duchess in Unsuk Chin’s Alice in Wonderland (world premiere), Mary in Der Fliegende Holländer, Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro, Third Lady in Die Zauberflöte, Berta in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Clotilde in Norma opposite Edita Gruberova, and Grimgerde in Die Walküre.

Ms. Jansen made her Seattle Opera debut in Elektra in 2009, and returned later in the season to cover multiple roles in The Ring. Other recent performances have included the title role in Philippe Boesmans’ Julie with the Teatro Comunale Bolzano, Italy, Mitrena in Vivaldi’s Motezuma with Long Beach Opera, Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Verdi’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Bach’s Mass in B Minor with the Santa Barbara Choral Society, and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the Angeles Chorale.

Ms. Jansen has appeared internationally with the Bavarian State Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic, Lisbon’s Gulbenkian Symphony Orchestra, Finland’s Savonlinna Festival, England’s Aldeburgh Festival, and the Orquestra Simfònica de Balears in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Her opera performances in the U.S. have included Carmen with Mobile Opera and the New West Symphony, the title role in La Périchole and Juno in Semele with Long Beach Opera, Nicklausse in Les Contes d’Hoffmann with Baltimore Opera, Fort Worth Opera and Tulsa Opera, and Maddalena in Rigoletto with the San Francisco Opera Center and Opera Columbus. She has also appeared in concert with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Pacific Symphony, Opera Pacific, the Columbus Symphony, and the Florida Philharmonic.

A native of Southern California, Ms. Jansen earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from the University of Southern California, and received additional training from the San Francisco Opera Center and Glimmerglass Opera. She began her professional career as a Los Angeles Opera resident artist, performing a number of roles with the company. She was a national semi-finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and a finalist in the Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition.
