Verdi's Messa da Requiem is unique among
Requiems, owing its pedigree to the
lyric Operas that Verdi composed with such passion. Filled with memorable
melodies and suffused with honest human emotion, the Requiem is surely one
of the enduring 19th century choral masterpieces. The ancient Latin funeral
text, with its vast expressive range (sorrow, consolation, fear, hope,
penitence, joy), is in fact a mirror of human experience. Verdi¹s love
of
drama makes this a work with universal appeal, keeping you riveted to your
seat through the magnificent solos and the richly composed chorales.
"This is a work of genius." -- Johannes
Brahms
