Concert Preview by Alan Chapman at 7:00 p.m.

The oratorio Elijah was the last great musical achievement of Felix Mendelssohn's brief but productive life. At its premiere in Birmingham, England in 1846, the work was such an immediate sensation that the audience insisted that Mendelssohn encore no fewer than four choruses and four arias! The riveting biblical story of Elijah is presented with dramatic choral movements and beautiful arias that cover the full range of human emotion from anger to gentle spirituality and thankfulness.

Maestro Donald Neuen is recognized as one of the world's most authoritative interpreters of this classic of the choral literature. As is our custom, the concert program will provide a complete text and sufficient lighting in the hall to allow our patrons to follow the drama.

This concert is supported in part by a grant from the E. Nakamichi Foundation
